Ameresco, Inc. approaches this challenge by integrating battery storage with generation, controls, financing and long-term operations. Its model treats storage as part of a broader energy infrastructure strategy, helping customers address specific power requirements while creating systems designed for reliability, scalability and sustained performance.
The System Behind the Storage
Storage has value when the system around it is designed for the site's actual operating conditions. Ameresco’s model reflects that premise. Its energy infrastructure business combines engineering, technology integration, project financing, construction management and long-term operations support across the project lifecycle. For BESS deployments, its capabilities can span development, design, procurement, construction, ownership and maintenance. This approach addresses both the physical requirements of a storage installation and the commercial realities that shape how the asset operates.
Storage can serve different functions depending on the customer’s operating environment and the demands placed on the grid. Ameresco’s applications include demand response, onsite generation consumption, electric bill management, backup power and ancillary services. For utilities, BESS can help balance loads, integrate renewable generation and strengthen grid reliability. The value of storage is closely tied to how effectively it responds to a specific operational need, when energy is stored, when it is dispatched and what that flexibility enables.
That flexibility becomes valuable as electrical loads grow larger and more dynamic. Data centers, industrial facilities and other critical infrastructure require dependable power while managing increasingly complex demand profiles. Ameresco has deployed more than 4 GW of resilient and renewable energy resources and brings experience integrating behind-the-meter resources for data center requirements. Its broader capabilities across microgrids, distributed generation and energy efficiency allow storage to function as part of a coordinated energy infrastructure strategy, rather than as an isolated asset.
Designed for Scale
The Nucor project illustrates how storage can be tailored to the demands of a specific operating environment rather than deployed as a standalone technology. At the Kingman, Arizona steel mill, Ameresco developed a 50 MW and 200 MWh behind-the-meter BESS to support the mill’s expansion and new electric arc furnace. The system helps manage substantial load swings while supporting operational reliability. Under a 20-year Storage Services Agreement, Ameresco develops, owns and operates the asset. Ameresco is also delivering a 30 MW AC solar asset at the site, scheduled to enter operation in 2026.

Ameresco combines storage with generation, controls, grid integration, financing and long-term asset services.
At United Power in Colorado, the model operates across a distribution network. Ameresco designed, built and financed eight BESS facilities across eight substations, totaling approximately 78 MW and 313 MWh. The systems support load balancing, renewable integration and resilience throughout the cooperative’s territory. Their combined capacity represents roughly 13 percent of United Power’s 634 MW peak load. The project also provides the cooperative with opportunities to participate in energy markets while using storage for several grid functions.
The UK project demonstrates how the delivery model extends across different market structures. For the Cellarhead project, Atlantic Green selected Ameresco and Envision Energy to deliver a 300 MW BESS with a maximum capacity of 624 MWh. Ameresco is also responsible for the EPC and O&M scope, including balance of plant, warranty and availability guarantees, while Envision Energy supplies the BESS and associated services.
From Storage to Impact
Ameresco’s integrated approach to battery storage extends from project development and delivery through ownership and long-term operations. In Ontario, the company worked with the Independent Electricity System Operator and Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution to develop two BESS facilities totaling 5 MW and 20 MWh. The systems store electricity during periods of excess supply and make it available during periods of higher demand, while also providing ancillary services and supporting grid reliability.
This lifecycle approach connects storage to the broader requirements of the energy system. By combining development, infrastructure integration and ongoing asset management, Ameresco can align BESS projects with specific grid and customer needs while remaining involved in how the assets perform over time. The result is a model in which battery storage serves as an active part of energy infrastructure, with its value shaped by how effectively it supports reliability, flexibility and changing patterns of electricity demand.
Ameresco’s differentiation lies in how it applies storage to the demands of each operating environment. Its experience across utility, industrial and critical infrastructure projects enables it to adapt the role of BESS to different load profiles, grid conditions and energy objectives. That flexibility becomes important as energy systems grow more distributed and customers require storage solutions that can evolve with changing operational needs.
Ameresco’s recognition as Top Battery Energy Storage Solutions Provider 2026 reflects the breadth and consistency of its work across increasingly complex energy environments. From supporting industrial expansion to strengthening distribution networks and enhancing existing generation assets, its projects demonstrate an ability to translate storage capacity into practical outcomes. The recognition underscores a delivery model grounded in engineering expertise, adaptable project execution and sustained asset performance, with each solution shaped around the operational demands of the system it serves.
