FREMONT, CA: Many wind turbine OEMs and component suppliers are under immense pressure to innovate, invest wisely in R&D, and minimize the time it takes for new technologies like wind turbines to reach the marketplace. This raises the question: how do OEMs deal with the shorter commercial life cycles of newer generation turbines and increased competition for reduced Levelized cost of electricity (LCOE)?
Onshore NPI decreases in temperature: OEMs will moderate the pace of onshore new product introduction (NPI) in the next two to three years, following the frantic pace of the previous four years. As turbines approach technology entitlement, leading OEMs are forced to minimize technology capital expenditures and supply chain investments. Rather than that, OEMs have begun positioning comparable product versions across worldwide markets while retaining the ability to customize minor product features for diverse wind regimes. Deploying identical goods across key onshore markets avoids the need to maintain different product platforms; OEMs can reduce new technology introduction expenses by extending existing products.

As turbine OEMs focus on maximizing earnings from existing platforms, research and development for new onshore technologies will become considerably more selective and strategic. The focus will be on rotor extension rather than MW growth to improve performance at low-wind locations, capitalize on repowering opportunities, and succeed in emerging nearshore markets.
Innovation in offshore wind turbines accelerates: As demand for offshore wind increases, technological innovation will focus on the development of offshore wind turbines. While onshore new build capacity continues to surpass offshore build capacity in the medium term, offshore turbine rating growth will outpace onshore development over the next decade. This indicates OEMs' and suppliers' attempts to scale up technologies that reduce the LCOE.
Regional variance in next-generation offshore platforms is almost certain: Western turbine manufacturers thrive on power increases, whereas Chinese manufacturers place a premium on rotor enhancements. Offshore turbines are predicted to attain a capacity of 20MW over the next decade, with rotor diameters approaching 300m.
The next generation of offshore wind turbine technology will prioritize the following:
