FREMONT CA: Eurocell, a British-Korean firm, has announced plans to build a 'gigafactory' for battery cells in Western Europe. This plant will also produce cells for electric cars and will be built in two phases with a 600 million pound initial investment.

The investment is approximately 715 million euros. Eurocell emphasizes that thanks to the phased strategy and "proven, production-ready technology," production should be possible in just 12 months. Production of battery cells developed in Korea for existing customers will begin in Europe as early as the first quarter of 2023, with a plant capable of producing more than 40 million cells per year by 2025.
According to Eurocell, the company's new European headquarters will result in the creation of hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, as well as the transfer of critical skills from Korean battery experts and the expansion of the economy in a strategic sector critical to Europe's net-zero goals. "Eurocell is the UK company, led by a highly experienced UK team and backed by South Korean partner with decades of experience in electro-chemistry, mass-scale battery production, and the construction of Gigafactories," states Recardo Bruins, CEO of Eurocell EMEA. Currently, they are looking to expand quickly in Europe, supplying the energy storage and automotive industries with our industry-leading technologies that last longer, perform better, and are completely safe.
Eurocell, which was founded in South Korea in 2018, calls its batteries "UFC High Power'' and "UFC High Energy," with UFC standing for "Ultra-Fast Charging." Eurocell claims to use a nickel-manganese cathode and a lithium titanate-based LTO anode. High charge and discharge rates of up to 10C are known to be possible with this material, as Eurocell also claims. One of this technology's shortcomings has been its low energy density, which is why LTO batteries are used in electromobility, such as buses, where battery installation space is less of an issue than in passenger cars. Eurocell does not provide energy density information.
It's still unclear whether these cells are suitable for use in electric vehicles. Eurocell also suggests that they could be used in stationary energy storage systems, where energy density would likely be less of an issue. Still, the cells' long shelf life would benefit. "Their wide operating temperature range also makes them ideally suited to areas with extreme weather and no existing grid network, specifies the company.
