FREMONT, CA: There is a misconception that among the proponents of hemp and cannabis that just by transforming from fossil fuels to the hemp, biofuel will solve the issues related to fossil fuel. Often they are presented as the solution for saving the planet, but biofuels itself has an immense amount of problems that can create more issues than solving it. 

There is nothing that can exist in isolation, so it is also significant to look at the effects that can occur on the planet while replacing fossil fuels with biofuels. Therefore, while making a comparison between hemp and other biofuel feedstock's, here are some of the benefits that can be checked. 

Biodiesel and ethanol can be developed from hemp

Biodiesel and ethanol are two types of biofuel. Ethanol is generally made from grains like barley, wheat, and corn or sugarcane. But it can also be developed from the plant's inedible parts and is commonly utilized as biofuel by blending it with petrol. 

Only 10% of ethanol can be added to petrol in cars that are designed for running on petrol. Moreover, the flexible fuel cars can make use of almost 80% of the ethanol mix. Many countries grow massive amounts of sugarcane so that vehicles can use biofuel, although some utilize 100% ethanol. 

Methanol, along with refined fats and oils like vegetable oils generated from animals and plants, is used to develop biodiesel. Most of the time, biodiesel gets blended with the regular diesel at the ratio of 4:1. However, the combination can range from 2% to 100% biodiesel, which is the most significant benefit of biodiesel as any diesel car can run on it. 

If hemp is grown as the feedstock for biofuel, it can develop both the biofuels. Hempseed consists of 30-35% of oil by weight, which offers a quantity of780 liter of fuel per hectare. However, the amount is significantly lower than that of coconut and palm oil but more than peanut, sunflower, and rapeseed. The remaining plant can be utilized for making ethanol with the fermentation under a low oxygen level.
