FREMONT, CA: Biomass is referred to as 'feedstock' when it is employed as an energy source. Feedstocks can be farmed particularly for their energy content (an energy crop) or made up of waste products from industries including agriculture, food processing, and lumber manufacture.
In boilers or furnaces, dry, combustible feedstocks such as wood pellets are burned. As a result, water boils, and steam is created, which spins a turbine to generate electricity. Wet feedstocks, such as food waste, are placed in sealed tanks to decay and produce methane gas (also called biogas). It is possible to trap and burn the gas to generate electricity. Is Bioenergy Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly?
Carbon dioxide is discharged when biomass is burned. However, it does not disrupt the carbon balance of the atmosphere because it releases the same quantity of carbon that the organic matter used to produce it received while growing.On the other hand, burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide that has been trapped for millions of years, from a period when the earth's atmosphere was fundamentally different. This releases additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, disrupting the carbon cycle. Whether waste feedstocks or energy crops are employed, bioenergy's overall sustainability and environmental benefits can vary.
Waste Feedstocks
When waste biomass rots, it naturally emits gases. If this occurs in an environment with no oxygen, such as food waste buried deep beneath a landfill, methane, a much stronger greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, can be produced. Instead of letting methane escape into the atmosphere, it can be trapped and burned by breaking it down in an enclosed tank. Burning methane produces carbon dioxide and water, both of which are beneficial to the environment.
Energy Crops
Energy crops are those that are planted only to generate electricity. So, unlike extracting methane from garbage, there is not a case that can be made that burning them cuts greenhouse gas emissions that would have been released anyhow. Energy crops, on the other hand, can still be low-carbon provided they are managed sustainably. For example, when energy crops are burned, equal crops should be planted to absorb the same amount of carbon emitted by the burning.
