Emerging technological advances enhance renewable energy storage methods for optimum output.
FREMONT, CA: The cost of wind and solar power generation has declined considerably in recent decades. Energy storage, on the other hand, is still quite expensive. Storage is essential because renewable energy generation is intermittent. For instance, it occurs when the wind blows, or the sun shines.
Here are three new technologies that may be able to assist in this endeavor.

Longer charges: Many consumers regularly utilize batteries in several facets of their daily life, from alkaline batteries for portable electronics to lithium-ion batteries for cars and computers. However, there is still a lot of opportunity for improvement. High-capacity batteries with long discharge times – up to 10 hours – could be useful for storing solar energy at night or extending the range of electric vehicles, for instance. Currently, just a few of these batteries are in use.
One of the most significant roadblocks is the scarcity of lithium and cobalt, which are generally required to produce lightweight, efficient batteries. By 2050, roughly 10 percent of the world's lithium stockpiles and nearly all of the world's cobalt reserves will be gone, according to some estimates. Scientists are researching strategies for reusing lithium and cobalt batteries and developing batteries made of sustainable resources.
Safer batteries: Another objective is to improve the safety of batteries. Electrolytes – the medium, frequently liquid that permits electrical energy to pass from the battery's anode, or negative terminal, to the cathode, or positive terminal – are one area where there is room for development. When a battery is in use, charged particles in the electrolyte move about to equalize the charge of the electricity coming out. Electrolytes frequently contain combustible substances. The battery could overcharge and burst into flames or melt if they leak.
Solid electrolytes are being developed by scientists to make batteries more durable. Although particles have a tougher time moving about in solids than in liquids, promising lab-scale studies imply that these batteries could be ready for deployment in electric vehicles within the next few years.
Storing sunlight as heat: In some circumstances, other renewable energy storage methods are less expensive than batteries. For example, concentrated solar power plants employ reflectors to focus sunlight, heating hundreds or thousands of tonnes of salt until it melts. This molten salt is then utilized to power an electric generator, similar to how coal or nuclear power heat steam and power a generator in typical plants.
Solar power that is concentrated is still somewhat expensive. It must improve its efficiency to compete with other energy generation and storage sources. One approach is to raise the temperature at which the salt is cooked, allowing for more efficient energy generation.
