Spain is making headway with green hydrogen development, aided by a growing wind and solar power complex in its efforts to decarbonize its economy.

The European Union has doubled its production target for 2030 as part of efforts to reduce its reliance on Russian energy supplies. The process of electrolysis, which separates water into hydrogen and oxygen by applying an electric current, produces green hydrogen. Since there are no hazardous emissions created by the electricity's renewable energy sources, it is considered green. Although fossil fuels release malignant greenhouse gasses, hydrogen emits non-toxic water vapour. The technology is a component of the EU's efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Green Hydrogen holds great potential as it can replace coal in large sectors like steel mills. Additionally, it can be used to create fertilizer, and future fuel for buses, trains, and aircraft in the future. The expensive expense of creating green hydrogen, however, has been a big disadvantage. Making "grey" hydrogen, which involves the use of fossil fuels that release greenhouse gases, is comparatively cheaper. However, due to advancements in technology and the rise in the cost of fossil fuels, green hydrogen is now more affordable. Spain has tremendous potential because of its highly established renewables industry and significant solar and wind resources (AeH2). Talking about the advantages of Spain, it has another sound control in its vast natural gas network and LNG terminals, which could be transformed to export hydrogen.
Major Spanish energy companies have teamed up to launch green hydrogen projects, comprising 15 solar parks, which will have the capacity to produce 330,000 tonnes of hydrogen by 2030, possibly the largest project of its kind in the world. Despite the possibility that Spain can become an energy hub, the country needs to subdue some hurdles before leading the proliferating sector. As electrolysis uses a lot of electricity, Spain is required to expedite the installation of solar and wind farms. Although the government has restarted a gas pipeline project that connects Catalonia and France and Madrid hopes to utilize it to transport hydrogen, Spain also lacks energy connectivity with the rest of Europe.
