Offshore Wind Resources Are Abundant: Offshore wind has the potential to provide enormous amounts of clean, renewable electricity to towns along the United States' coastlines. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory believes that the technological resource potential for offshore wind in the United States is more than 2,000 gigatonnes of capacity or 7,200 terawatt-hours of power per year.
Offshore Wind Turbines Can Be Extremely Tall: To exploit the tremendous wind resources allocated offshore, offshore turbines can be scaled up to 1.5 times the height of the Washington Monument, with blades the length of a football field.
Undersea cables are used by offshore wind farms to transmit electricity to the grid: Electricity generated by offshore wind turbines is returned to land via a number of cable systems buried in the seafloor. This electricity is routed through coastal load centers, which prioritize where the electricity should go before distributing it to our homes, schools, and businesses via the electrical grid.
Offshore Wind Turbines Can Float: A number of companies are working on unique floating offshore wind platforms for use in deep oceans. Spar-buoy, tension leg platform, and semi-submersible are the three types of floating platforms. Semi-submersible platforms are expected to be used in approximately 75% of projects.
Offshore Wind is Convenient: In many places where offshore wind projects are proposed, offshore wind speeds are greatest in the afternoon and evening, when consumer demand is at its peak. The majority of land-based wind resources are more powerful at night, when electricity demand is lower.
