FREMONT, CA: In 2021, the U.S. nuclear business scored many significant victories, and this trend will continue in 2023 with the implementation of the new Bipartisan Infrastructure Act.

Here are some nuclear energy-related events to watch in 2023:
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Act includes about $62 billion for the U.S. Department of Energy to help transition the country to a clean energy economy, which provides for utilizing nuclear energy, the nation's greatest clean power source.
CIVIL NUCLEAR CREDITS: The law allocates $6 billion to launch a Civil Nuclear Credit scheme, through which owners or operators of commercial U.S. reactors can seek certification and bid competitively on credits to support their continuing operations and prevent premature retirements due to financial difficulty. DOE intends to solicit public input to establish the program and might begin giving credits to U.S. nuclear power reactors as early as this fall.
CLEAN HYDROGEN PRODUCTION: A portion of the new law will also be used to create regional hydrogen hubs, at least one of which will be devoted to producing hydrogen using nuclear energy. Before the end of the year, initial selections could be made. DOE now sponsors four clean hydrogen demonstration projects at commercial nuclear power stations across the country as part of its Hydrogen Shot initiative to reduce the cost of hydrogen to $1 per kilogram in ten years.
ADVANCED REACTORS: The Bipartisan Infrastructure Act allocates roughly $2.5 billion to finance the demonstration of two advanced reactors in the United States by 2028. X-energy plans to build its four-unit Xe-100 reactor power plant at the Hanford site near Richland, Washington, while TerraPower will build its Natrium reactor in Kemmerer, Wyoming, utilizing the existing infrastructure and staff at a retiring coal facility. Both initiatives will be managed by the Department of Energy's newly established Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, which will continue to adhere to expedited schedules.
Introduction of New Reactors
LARGE-SCALE REACTORS: For the first time in more than six years, the United States might add a new commercial reactor to the grid. Unit 3 at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Georgia, is more than 99 percent complete and is set to come online later in November. Plant Vogtle in Georgia is constructing two AP-1000 reactors, the first new units to be constructed in the United States over three decades. The Loan Programs Office of the Department of Energy offered more than $12 billion in loan guarantees to assist in the completion of the expansion of the nation's largest clean energy power plant. Unit 4 is expected to be operational by 2023.
SMALL MODULAR REACTORS: The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is anticipated to submit its final rulemaking to certify the small modular reactor design of NuScale Power in August. NuScale is the first U.S. SMR to get the NRC's final safety evaluation report and will be the seventh U.S. reactor to be certified. DOE is sponsoring Idaho National Laboratory's building of the nation's first NuScale SMR power station. By 2029, the first power module should be operational.
