Swedish battery company recently reported a world-first: a battery which can be reconditioned multiple times towards the end of its ‘normal’ cycle life, yielding more than 10,000 complete discharge cycles at high C-rates. Through successful collaboration with leading researchers from Stockholm University, Nilar International AB has developed a method for multiple regeneration of electrolyte through oxygen infusion in its Nilar Hydride® batteries.

Safe, reliable, and continuous electricity supply is often taken for granted, but the electricity grid is a complex system and not in balance all the time. Deployment of renewable energy from wind and solar is increasing rapidly but is affected by their intermittent nature since weather dependent. Energy storage plays a vital role to buffer and helps create a flexible and reliable electricity grid.

They are fully recyclable and free of cadmium, mercury, and lead. Unlike other industrial batteries that use Lithium-ion battery technology, in which fire is a major hazard as recently reported by the press with cases from Korea and the US, Nilar Hydride® batteries do not pose such risks. They can be safely transported by air, road, sea, or rail and are easily installed in any location. The future looks bright for Nilar.

The company’s latest product series, Nilar EC (Energy Compact) is modular and scalable, enabling configurations of voltages from 96 to 720V. The EC Battery pack addresses time shifting and peak shaving needs of today and the future.

It is made with minimal hard-to-recover raw materials and comes in Nilar’s unique bi-polar design. For safe energy storage in office buildings, apartment blocks and housing estates, the Nilar EC Cabinet solution is increasingly chosen. The cabinets come in four configurations ranging between 11,5 – 28,8 kWh, which are all maintenance free and provide several advantages, such as support during critical loads and full remote monitoring. For larger industrial applications with frequency regulation requirements, the Nilar EC Rack solution of 57,6 kWh to several MWh is a great fit.

A recent example of an applications of Nilar energy storage systems is a luxury hotel accommodation on the island Texel in The Netherlands. When Nieuw Leven Texel, wanted to renovate their properties and re-launch the accommodation with a focus on sustainability, they turned to Nilar for a safe, environmentally friendly and reliable energy storage. In parallel, Nieuw Leven invested in solar panels and a wood pellet boiler to produce electricity. The panels give power via a 27.6kW PV ABB TRIO inverter, whereas the extra energy is fed into a 48 kWh Nilar Rack system via a 50kW ABB ESI battery inverter. "A sustainable goal also includes sustainable batteries. The Nilar system is not only the safest battery in the market; it is also fully recyclable,” says Martijn Eelman, Co-owner of Nieuw Leven.

Moving ahead, Nilar is strengthening its market position by first focusing on the European and then the U.S. markets. “We have a very well-planned roadmap. We are thus waiting for the right time to extend our foot in the global market,” concludes Wigren.
